Quote: “Anything external that defines us can be shaken. Our definition must therefore be of an internal making.” -Tee Archer

Anything outside of you can change.

Jobs end. Titles disappear. Relationships shift. Bodies age. Money comes and goes. People who once applauded you may stop. The room that celebrated you today may barely remember your name tomorrow.

That is not pessimism. It is simply the nature of external things.

And if something outside of you has been given the power to tell you who you are, then whenever it changes, your identity changes with it.

That is a dangerous way to live.

But the answer is not simply to stop listening to other people and start defining yourself.

For the believer, identity begins with God.

Before you had a title, He knew you. Before anyone applauded you, He valued you. Before you accomplished anything impressive, you were made in His image. Your worth was never waiting for achievement to give it permission to exist.

The work we must do internally is learning to believe that.

It is allowing what God says about us to become more deeply rooted than what circumstances, culture, failure, success, rejection, or approval say about us.

That takes work because external things are loud.

Success can tell you that you are important. Failure can tell you that you are worthless. Rejection can tell you that you are unwanted. Comparison can tell you that you are behind. Praise can become so intoxicating that you begin needing it just to feel secure.

None of them should have that much authority.

You can appreciate achievement without becoming your achievement. You can enjoy being celebrated without needing applause to know your value. You can grieve rejection without allowing it to rewrite your identity. You can lose something important without losing yourself with it.

That is what happens when your identity has roots.

So yes, build from within.

But do not build from whatever you happen to feel about yourself today. Build from what God has already established as true.

Let His truth travel from something you know intellectually to something you have settled internally.

Because when what God says about you has taken root within you, the world can still shake what surrounds you—

without shaking who you are.

“So you also are complete through your union with Christ…” -Colossians 2:10 (NLT)
